Chu Ai Li

Australia
Piper Alderman

Chu Ai Li was called to the Malaysian Bar in 1996. She joined Azman Davidson & Co in 2001 and became a Partner in 2004.

Ai Li helps clients present their cases so that they are clearly heard and understood by the Court or arbitrator or adjudicator. As a result, just decisions are made by the Court or arbitrator or adjudicator.  Among the memorable cases she handled are the following, where the odds did not appear to be in her clients’ favour:

  • Was appointed counsel for the respondent in an arbitration at a late stage, after the claimant had closed its case and the respondent had started its case. The respondent lost one application after another and the odds were heavily tipped against the respondent. After a gruelling face-off against a tough opponent, the arbitrator decided in her client’s favour and dismissed the entire claim of RM20 Million.
  • In an adjudication under the Construction Industry Payment and Adjudication Act 2012 (CIPAA), Ai Li acted as counsel to defend a project employer against a claim of RM73 Million. After a tough fight, the adjudicator awarded a sum of about RM1 Million to the claimant, a massive reduction from the claim sum.
