Bill Sullivan is a Senior Foreign Counsel in Indonesia as well as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, a Solicitor of the High Court of Australia, an Attorney and Counselor-at-law in all courts of the State of New York, an Attorney and Counselor-at-law in the United States District Court for the Southern and Eastern Districts, a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales and a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Hong Kong, admitted to practice in each of these jurisdictions. He was previously an international equity partner of a global law firm.

Bill’s first involvement with Indonesia was in the early 1990’s when he was seconded by an Australian law firm to a leading Indonesian law firm for the purpose of providing international legal expertise in the corporate and securities area. He subsequently spent 12 months on secondment at the Indonesian central bank, during 1999-2000, in the capacity of technical adviser on debt restructuring matters to the Indonesian central bank as part of an Australian government funded, AusAID project. Following this secondment, he relocated to Jakarta and concentrated on re-establishing the presence of the global law firm in Indonesia.

Bill concentrates on the Indonesian mining, energy and resources sector. Bill has been involved in the negotiation, structuring and documentation of numerous coal, gold, iron ore, nickel, manganese and mineral sands project acquisitions, financings, investments and restructurings. Bill has spoken and written widely on numerous aspects of the 2009 Mining Law and its implementing regulations. As a consequence, Bill is regarded as one of Indonesia’s leading experts on the local mining law and regulatory regime.

Bar Admittance and Education

Bill Sullivan is admitted to practice law in New South Wales and Australia (1981), the State of New York and the United States District Court for the Southern and Eastern Districts (1983), England, Wales and Hong Kong (1988) and is a Licensed Foreign Advocate in Indonesia (2005).

He holds the degrees of B.Com (Accounting) (with merit) (1980), LL.B (1981) and M.Com (Finance) (1986) from the University of New South Wales, LL.M (1982) from Harvard Law School, MBA (1990) and SJD (2000) from the University of Sydney. At Harvard Law School, Bill was both a Frank Knox Memorial Fellow and the recipient of a Fulbright Postgraduate Award.
